Lockjaw Takes Life Tuesday of Local Boy
Tetanus (lockjaw infection) Tuesday morning claimed the life of Dale Florine, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. K. A. Florine of Larrabee.

The lad had been a patient at Sioux Valley hospital since Sunday when his jaws set. A physician said the infection was traced directly to a sliver which the boy ran into his foot about a week and a half ago.

His mother, Mrs. Florine, wife of a Cherokee businessman, treated the boy at home immediately after he ran the sliver into his foot. The physician said Mrs. Florine pulled the sliver out and applied hot packs to the injury. Dale’s condition did not improve noticeably, and Sunday morning became acute when his jaws became rigid and immovable.

He was brought to the hospital about 10:00 a.m. Sunday, the physician reported, and his condition grew gradually worse. He died at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Funeral services for the small boy will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon from Appleyard & Boothby Funeral home here with the Rev. Alfred C. Petersen, pastor of Memorial Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery.

The lad is survived by his parents, six sisters and three brothers, Charlotte, Lucille, Gladys, Bonita, Adelia, Patricia, John, Robert and Thomas, all at home.
