Funeral services for Carl William Sagert, 79, Iowa City and formerly of West Branch, were held April 26, 1997 at the Bethany Lutheran church in West Branch, with the Rev. Kelly Lewis officiating. Shirley Sondergard was the organist and Mark Scharnweber sang. Pallbearers were Paul and Brian Weismann, Mark Alexander, David and Mark Gilmer, and Will Maas. Burial was in the West Branch cemetery.

Mr. Sager died April 23 at Mercy hospital in Iowa City, following complications from surgery.

The son of George and Anna Sagert, he was born March 17, 1918 in Denver. In his early years he helped his parents with the family restaurant business in Denver and he sold butter in northwest Iowa. He married Bernice Pedersen on June 23, 1946 in West Branch. She died June 24, 1986.

Mr. Sagert worked for the railroad in northwest Iowa before moving to West Branch and operating West Branch Hardware. After his retirement he worked for MECCA in Tipton.

Following the death of his wife he volunteered at the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Citizen Center as a peer counselor and host guide. He also helped with construction of the Post newspaper. As a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) he poured coffee at Senior Dining.

He married Iva Hilleman Aug. 30, 1990 and moved to Iowa City.

Mr. Sagert was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran church in West Branch.

He raised and showed Norwegian Elkhounds and miniature horses. He loved children and animals, and had many young friends. He also loved gardening, especially flowers, his yard and birds. He enjoyed reading and traveling.

Mr. Sagert is survived by his wife, Iva, Iowa City; 3 step-children; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife and his parents.

Memorials may be made to the Iowa City/Johnson County senior Center of Bethany Lutheran church in West Branch.
