Funeral services for Herbert H. Oxley, 67, West Branch, were held April 28, 1997 at St. Bernadette Catholic church in West Branch, with the Rev. Ed O'Melia officiating. Special music was provided by Mary Stark. Pallbearers were Herbert J., James, Brian, Kevin, Timothy, Marcus and John Oxley. Honorary pallbearers were Amy and Ryan Chavera; Jeremy, Brandon, Nicholas, Jennifer, Jamie, Jason, Tara, Chase, Paxton and Alyssa Oxley; Angelina and Jacqueline Smith, Justine Laing; and Bridget Fuhrmeister. Burial, with military honors, was in the Downey cemetery.

Mr. Oxley died April 26 at the Veterans Medical Center in Iowa City, following a long illness.

The son of Orville and Naomi Ferguson Oxley, he was born Oct. 19, 1929 in Nevada. He graduated from Nevada high school. He married Julia Stark on Feb. 26, 1953 in Ames.

Mr. Oxley had been the co-owner of the Marshalltown Meat Processing and Locker Plant, and also the Monroe Meat Processing Locker. He later moved to West Branch, where he operated the Oxley Meat Processing plant for 12 years. Following that he worked for S and J. Poultry Co. and the West Branch Roofing Co. before retiring.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic church and the Tipton VFW.

Mr. Oxley is survived by his wife; 7 sons, Herbert Joseph, West Branch; James, West Liberty; Brian, Midway, Ark.; Kevin, Riverside; Timothy and Marcus, both of Iowa City; and John, Coralville; 3 daughters, Monica Chavera, West Liberty; Rose Mary Laing, Wapello; and Laura Fuhrmeister, Lone Tree; 3 brothers, Robert, Colo; David, Tucson, Ariz. and Ronald, Watertown, Minn.; 2 sisters, Arlene Miemann, Nevada; and Norma Meyers, Tucson, Ariz. and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Janelle, and a sister.
