Memorial services for Merritt (Mac) McCarty, 75, West Branch, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 1997 at the West Branch United Methodist church, with the Rev. Richard M. Paulus officiating. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Hardin cemetery in Hardin, Mont.
Mr. McCarty died suddenly April 18 at Mercy hospital in Iowa City, following a heart attack at his home.
The son of Bradford and Myrtle Folkerson McCarty, he was born March 14, 1922 in Hardin, Mont. He graduated from Hardin high school and was an alumni of Montana State College. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity in Bozeman, Mont. He married Mary Elizabeth Shriver Aug. 1, 1942 in Red Lodge, Mont.
Mr. McCarty was in the feed and grain business all of his life. He moved to West Branch in 1957 and became a partner in the West Branch Farm Supply Co., until retiring.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the West Branch United Methodist church. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, where he was a past president and secretary/treasurer. He was a member of the West Branch Booster Club, the West Branch fire department, the West Branch city council and the Chancey Butler American Legion Post in West Branch, where he was a past commander.
Mr. McCarty is survived by his wife; 2 sons, Michael M. McCarty, West Branch; and Brad H. McCarty, Arboles, Colo.; a daughter, Patricia E. Whitlock, Bozeman, Mont.; a sister, Shirley Ashford, Los Angeles, Calif.; and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 infant brothers and a sister.
