Memorial services for Alberta Elizabeth Read, 96, Edina, Minn. and formerly of Clarence; were held March 25, 1997 at Washburn McReavy Funeral Home Edina, Minn., with graveside services to be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 26 at the Clarence cemetery. Rev. Larry Haywood will officiate.

Mrs. Read died March 19 at her residence in Edina, Minn.

The daughter of Elmer B. and Jeanette Greig Hoyman, she was born Sept. 25, 1900 in Clarence. She was valedictorian of the class of 1917 at Clarence high school. She graduated from Coe College in 1922 with a degree in education. She married Maurice Dexter Read Sept. 14, 1922 in Cedar Rapids.

Following the death of her husband, she had been involved in an Iowa farm business which she inherited.

Mrs. Read was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian church, the P.E.O. Chapter BC and the Womans Club of Minneapolis.

She is survived by 4 nieces, Ruth Shreeve, Janet Palmeter, Karen Butler and Catherine McClellan; a nephew, Greg McClellan; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Julianne Read Sackett; and a son, Dexter Read.

Memorials may be made to a preferred charity to the Alberta Elizabeth Read Scholarship Fund at Coe College.
