Memorial services for Dr. Ralph C. Appleby, 77, West Branch, will be held at a later date. The body has been donated to University hospitals in Iowa City.

Dr. Appleby died March 20, 1997 at Crestview Care and Rehabilitation in West Branch, following a long illness.

The son of Clarence and Doris Carson Appleby, he was born Nov. 16, 1919 in Eldon. He graduated from Eldon high school in 1937 and attended the University of Iowa, where he earned 3 degrees: business administration in 1941, doctor of dental surgery in 1951 and master of science in prosthetic dentistry in 1953.

Dr. Appleby served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946.

He married Beryl K. Appleby in 1945 in Sketty, South Wales.

Dr. Appleby was a faculty member of the UI College of Dentistry from 1951 to 1981, when he retired. He was a member of the University District Dental Society, Iowa Dental Association, American Dental Association, American Prosthodontic Society, International Association for Dental Research and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. In 1976 the UI presented him with the Hancher-Finkbine Award.

He is survived by his wife; and 2 sons, Drew C. Appleby, Indianapolis, Ind. and Gary M. Appleby, West Branch.

Memorial donations may be made to the Dental Achievement Fund, University of Iowa Foundation.
