Superintendent's School Notes

1933
Franklin No. 4
We have three new pupils this year, Elaine Ball and
Charles Hammond in the first grade and Fred Schlitter in
the seventh. Ruth Bloxham, our 8th grade graduate of last
year, has entered the Luana High School.
The following have had a perfect monthly attendance
record: Donna Mae Krambeer, Veva June Bloxham, Marian
Dunning, Harlan Chamberlain, Evelyne Dunning and Leora
and Jeanne Bloxham.
We all are trying to make our schoolroom the Good Habit
Land. During vacation, Mr. Krambeer had the walls washed
and an extra good job of cleaning done, and we are
anxious to keep it in this condition. New screens are
being purchased.
On Friday, September 22, the South Grove Yankees
challenged the Franklin Stars to a game of kittenball.
Both sides did some good playing and the game was very
close. At the end of the first inning the score was 9 to
1 in favor of South Grove, in the second inning we began
to gain a little and the score was 16 to 14 still in
their favor, but the third inning we tied 21 to 21. The
excitement was at its highest for the time was quickly
passing and when the signal to quit came the score was 30
to 26 in favor of South Grove. We plan to meet this team
on their home ground in the near future, and with our
extra practice, we hope to win the game next time. The
South Grove team is composed of: Captain Henry Paulson,
Leonard, Wesley and Ruth Thoma, Clifford Olson, and Hilda
and Hazel Paulson. The following is our lineup: Captain,
Charles Nagle, Fred Schlitter, Evelyne Dunning, Leora
Bloxham, Eileen Chamberlain, Marvin Ball, Thomas Nagle,
and Earl Chamberlain. Marian Dunning, Gertrude Ball,
Jeanne Bloxham, Harlan Chamberlain are not on the team,
but they do help us (?) and they are very promising ball
players.
The first monthly report cards have been passed out, and
as a whole they were very satisfactory. Some of us
however, will have to raise our standard for our aim is
"No one single failure."
Donna Mae Krambeer and Marian Dunning had a perfect
spelling record and both girls received 100% in the
spelling examination.
We have had many beautiful bouquets at school. They are
greatly appreciated.
The following persons are planning(?) to present the
comedy, "The Deacon Slips" for the benefit of
the school in the near future: Robert Bloxham, Lynn
Hangartner, Claude Rose, Fred Nagel, Lulu Hammond, Leslie
and Lillian Powell, Margaret and Robert Krambeer and
Charles Bloxham. Be sure to watch for further
announcements.

On Friday evening a very large number of people gathered
at the Franklin No. 4 school to hear the play, "The
Deacon Slips," which was very good. The school house
was so crowded that many had to stand on the porch. After
the play a free lunch was served to all.

1934
We have completed three months of school.
Our attendance has been fair. Many pupils were absent on
account of illness. Others found it necessary to assist
with home work. We hope it will be better next period.
Our second grade is enjoying many books this year. We
have been fortunate in securing some readers from Miss
McCormick and our neighbor schools. We appreciate their
help.
During this period we had "Visitors Day." The
parents and friends were invited to spend a day with us.
We wanted every family represented but it was too busy a
season. The following were present: Mrs. Ball, Mrs. Van
Horn, Mrs. Barth, Mrs. Krambeer and Margaret, and Mrs.
Lee Bloxham. We had our daily program until 2:30. At that
time a Puppet Show was presented and we had a spelling
contest. Mrs. Bloxham favored us with "What Parents
Expect of Schools." Mrs. Krambeer contrasted rural
schools with consolidated. We surely enjoyed these
discussions and learned many worth while facts. Miss
Foley explained some of the new changes in our school
program and discussed the alms of our school activities.
An invitation to visit us at any time is extended to our
friends.
Some excellant notebooks are being made by Jeanne
Bloxham, Crystal Van Horn, Gertrude Ball, Harlan
Chamberlain, Marion Dunning, Ella Barth, Donna Mae
Krambeer and Vera June Bloxham.
Gertrude Ball, Donna Mae Krambeer and Harlan Chamberlain
received a score of 100 in spelling this period. The
following received 90 or above : Marion Dunning, Ella
Barth and Ruth Bloxham.
Many new books have been added to our library, several
pupils are constructing book cases from crates so they
may take better care of their personal library.
The pupils of the school extend their thanks to the
following persons who presented a three-act play.
"Windy Willows," at the school for our benefit;
Margaret and Robert Krambeer, Robert, Curtis and Ruth
Bloxham, Lula Hamman, Fred Nagel and Lynn Hangartner.
Through the co-operation of these people funds havd been
added to our district to promote some of the better
things of school life. This is the second year that this
group has assisted us. We wish you much success when you
repeat the play at the Luana Opera House, Friday evening,
November 30th.
We are using score cards to check our records in history,
geography and reading. The work proves more interesting
when we compare with our former record.
The following have an average of 90 or above this period:

1936
We completed our second period November
20. Ella Barth, Elaine Ball and Ruth Barth had perfect
attendance.
Guests the past month were Patricia Lou Brewer, Edwin
Wiedenmann, Vernell Ball, Mrs. Isabella Whalen and Audrey
Crabbe and Gertrude Ball.
We have several new fiction books in our library.
Floyd Plummer and Charles Hammon have a very interesting
scrapbook of automobiles and trucks. Marian Dunning has a
scrapbook of the presidential campaign.
Charles Hammon received 100% in his six weeks spelling
contest.
Earl Chamberlain joined our group October 20, se we now
have thirteen pupils. We are glad to have him with us.
We had a program November 6 and made a profit of about
$20.00. We gave away a beautiful bed blanket which was
received by Mrs. John Barth. Eileen Gulsvig of St. Olaf
was presented with an end table. We had a very large
attendance. Our rhythm band proved to be quite a success,
and all seemed to like it.
We have our room decorated with turkeys and colonial
scenes of Thanksgiving and a large poster of the Pilgrims
at Plymouth Rock.

1937
We received our report cards April 16th
for the fifth six weeks. Ruth and Ella Barth had a
perfect attendance record this period.
March 15th brought with it three new pupils, Zonna Mae
and Amy Georgene Dahms and Vernel Ball.
The following pupils have had a perfect spelling record
this six weeks: Donna Mae Krambeer, Zonna Mae Dahms,
Elaine Ball, Amy Georgene Dahms and Ruth Barth.
Good Friday the Easter rabbit visited us and brought us
all something to eat.
We received a letter from Richard and Floyd Plummer who
moved away. We were glad to hear from them and intend to
answer soon.
Our eighth graders are working hard for their tests in
May.
The visitors to our school have been Gertrude Ball, Mr.
and Mrs. James Enyard, Rose Marie Brewer, Patricia Lou
Brewer and Doris Ann Meyer, Doris Ann Meyer, Donna Mae
Krambeer and Zonna Mae Dahms.

Fire! Fire! This was our watchword for
the past week on Fire Prevention Week. Some very
interesting talks were given by the upper classes
pertaining to carelessness and prevention of fires.
The following pupils have been neither absent nor tardy
the past six weeks: Elaine Ball, Donna Mae Krambeer, Amy
Drahms, Ruth Barth and Zonna Mae Dahms.
The visitors the past few weeks were: Gertrude Ball, Ella
Barth, Jean Bloxham, Doris Ann Meyer and Marian Dunning.
We enjoyed their visits very much and hope they will come
again.
The seventh grade has been busy making oilcloth aprons
for extra work in drawing classes, while the fourth grade
is finishing book ends. The fifth grade is making a bird
house.
