Allamakee St., c1890

The Old Court House (built in 1861) is dominant in the background. Also visible are the Dillenberg stone building and the Martin building on the right side of Allamakee Street, as are the columns of the Old Opera House and the Allamakee Hotel on the left. The view is looking north.

~contributor comments: I think the photo looks north, somewhere in the 500 or 600 section for house numbers on Allamakee St.

View of West Main Street, undated

On one corner is Grimm Brothers Drug Store, and across the street is Hale and Sons Department Store.  Beyon Hale's is the former entrance to one of several Waukon Banks, and the Grand Hotel is clearly visible at the end of the block.

Lee Bros Co. Dept. Store, Waukon
Lee Bros Co. Dept. Store, Waukon

~contributor comments: The Lee Brothers Department Store is mentioned in the local newspaper as early as May 1923. Over the years, the building has been the home to many business places and has gone through various remodeling alterations to the exterior of the building/buildings. Based on the architectural design of the arched windows on the second level of the building on the left, and the row of 4 windows on the second level of the building on the right , I think, as of October 18, 2011, the building is now the Hartwig USA Drug Store (21 West Main Street) downtown Waukon, Iowa. In the 1950's and the 1960's, it was the Schultz's Five and Dime Variety Store.
