South Side Main Street, undated

This is a classic view of the south side of Lansing's Main Street, from the Gilbertson & Schaefer building on the far right corner, all the way down the street to the Model Clothing Store.  In between you could find ice cream, cigars, shoes, the Mirror Newspaper Office, the book store, and every kids favorite, Dutch's Place, with its "butter coated popcorn and fresh roasted peanuts".

Lansing Post Office Staff & Building, undated

The staff of the Lansing Post Office gathered outside their office to pose for this picture many years ago. The side door on the old bank building that led into the Post Office is no longer used, people now go in the front door to find themselves in Hanley's Tavern. The U.S. postal system moved from this office to there present location, across from the bank, in February of 1956. Tom Gilbertson, the man on the far left, was the only staff member in this early photo that also made mention in the paper the week of the moving. At that time he was Assistant Postmaster; when the photo was taken he worked as a clerk in the office. Standing next to him is Bob Guider, George Scholtes and Carl Wagner, all rural carriers; Postmaster Carl Bechtel, and Peter Zabolitzky, rural carrier. Clerk Mazie Dunlevy and mail messenger Jack Cassidy are seated in the wagon with the mail all loaded and ready for delivery. It was horse "Quennie's" job to pull the wagon through snow and sleet and rain, etc. to ensure delivery for all of Lansing's postal residents.

Robert Cavers Store, 1915

From this 1915 real photo postcard, it looks like just about anything you could want was available at Robert Cavers Store. Cavers stands with his helper, Lloyd Belheimer, their clothing leaving no doubt as to who is who. The store was one of four general stores in operation in Lansing during 1921 when the business directory, also printed here, was compiled. It closed in 1945.

Lansing parade, undated

This photo of a parade unit in Lansing is undated.  The building in the background is Julius Rieth Hardware.  This is where the grocery store stands today.

Lansing carnival, 1916

This decorated car was a prize winner at a carnival in Lansing in October of 1916. Pictured L-R: Alice (on the hood), William Lenz (driving), Marie May, Hazel Dolphin, Ruth Englehorn, Myrna Schultz, Evelyn Lenz & Violet Thorp. John Schafer on the sidewalk, decorated the vehicle.

Lansing View

The Stone School in Lansing is one of the more noteworthy landmarks in this photo.  The Stone School, built in 1864, served the community until 1973.  For over one hundred years the city park was the site for social, family and political gatherings. The city park is now the location of Kee High School.

Lansing View, late 1880's

This photo depicts the center of Lansing in the late 1800s, as well as some of the daily activities of the time.  In the background, a steamboat pushing a log raft can be seen going downriver.  Other buildings that can be identified are the Concert Hall, the saw mill, the Railroad watertower; and Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank and Dry Goods.
