Stevens - Mero Family Album



Matthias Stevens was born December 29, 1806. His wife, Elizabeth David, was born April 4, 1811. They were the parents of 6 children. Matthias and Elizabeth removed to Wisconsin, where he was engaged in lead mining. Elizabeth died of a stroke on February 21, 1878 and is buried in Oakwood cemetery, Floyd co. IA. Matthias died May 24, 1880 and is buried in Rock Church cemetery, Livingston, WI.

Their son Daniel Francis Stevens was born in Madison co. NY on September 23, 1844.

Frederick Mero was born June 19, 1826. His wife, Delila Adkins, was born March 12, 1834. Their daughter Florence was born in Clifton twp., New California, Grant Co., WI on February 10, 1853. On September 23, 1862 Frederick Mero enlisted in the Civil War. He died July 29, 1863, aboard a hospital boat on the Mississippi river and is buried in Helena, Arkansas.

Florence Mero met Daniel F. Stevens, a Civil War veteran, in 1867 when she was 14 years old. They were married in Mifflin, Iowa co., WI on May 3, 1868, and lived there for 2 years.

The family removed to Iowa with Daniel's parents in 1872 and filed claims in Sibley, Osceola co. where Daniel built a sod house. The dreams of the young family were shattered when their crops were eaten by a plague of grasshoppers. They moved east to Floyd Co. in the summer of 1873 and then to O'Brien Co. in December 1878. They located in Waukon in the fall of 1879, where they lived in town and on rented farms until 1893. They removed to De Soto, WI for 3 years before returning to Waukon, where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Daniel and Florence were the parents of eleven children:

Mary Alice, born in February 1869 and died August 31, 1870. She is buried in the Rock Church cemetery, Livingston, WI

Joseph Francis, born March 31, 1871; married Mary Jean Greenhalgh

Perry David, born July 31, 1873

Delilah Edith, born May 25, 1876, married William McWilliams

Ada Ellen, born July 10, 1878

Annie Daisy, born September 5, 1880

Archie Willis, born September 18, 1882 and died November 15, 1885

Daniel Augustine, born March 7, 1885

John Elton, born August 19, 1887

Eliza Jessieman, born March 28, 1890; married to Oliver Otis Stockton in Madison, WI on August 4, 1908. See Stockton Family Album

Wayne Delbert, born December 4, 1892. He moved to Clymen, WI to open a barber shop. Was married to Rose Brigowatz on April 22, 1913. He died on October 22, 1918 of Spanish Influenza and is buried in St. Isador Cemetery, Clyman, WI

Florence wrote a memoir in 1921, the year before she died. The Journal of Florence (Mero) Stevens.
Daniel died in Waukon on March 8, 1912 and Florence died while visiting her son in Wauwatosa, WI on November 23, 1922. They are buried in Oakland cemetery.
