Thomas Joseph Murphy, Civil War Dr. Thomas Joseph Murphy 1843-1906


Dr. Thomas Joseph Murphy, born March 25, 1843 in Abbeyfeale, Limmerick, Ireland.  He sailed to America in 1851 with his parents and siblings. They settled first in Iowa and by 1860 they were farming in Allamakee County. 

October 10, 1861 he married Sarah Elizabeth O'Mara at Waukon.  October 27, 1862 their first son, John Henry, was born at Lansing.  Two months later he enlisted in Co. M, 2nd Iowa Cavalry. He participated thoughout the Civil War in various units and engagements until severely wounded and hospitalized in Tennessee.

After discharge from the hospital and the military, he returned to Iowa for a few years. Daughter Mary was born about 1867.  Between 1871 and 1873 the extended family relocated west to Nebraska where son George Thomas and daughters Blanche and Alice were born.

Thomas attended medical schools in Ohio and Missouri, and established practice as physician and surgeon in David City, Nebraska until 1902.  He passed away June 16, 1906 at a soldiers home in Los Angeles, California, and was buried in Nebraska.
