Yeoman Ethel Vessey

PROSPECTIVE WAVES -- Yesterday was the opening day of a three-day drive in Davenport by the navy to recruit enlistees for the WAVES and the SPARS. The office of the naval recruiting station was crowded all afternoon with prospective candidate for these two branches or service. Yeoman Ethelbelle Vessy is in the city from Des Moines heading the drive and is shown with three of her candidates. The young ladies are, left to right, Miss Mary Marshall, 3001 Fair avenue, who has completed her papers and will leave Saturday for Des Moines to take her physical; Miss Ella Jannan, East Moline and Miss Helen Zuber, 1825 West Fourth street. Miss Zuber is employed by Zoller Brewing Co., and expects to leave next week for her physical examination. The two navy recruiters are Frank Vereettt and N.O. Dalhun.

Yeoman Vessey of The Waves Attends Meetings of Clubs

Yeoman Ethelbelle Vessey of Des Moines, who is here as a representative of the WAVES and SPARS, spoke to members of the Credit of Women's Breakfast club this morning at their meeting at the Chamber of Commerce. There were covers for 25.

Yeoman Vessy was also the speaker at a dinner meeting Thursday evening at the Chamber of Commerce, arranged in her honor by the Wa-Tan-Ye Service club, the Pilot club, the Business and Professional Women's club, Quota club, National Secretaries association, Portia club, American Association of University Women, Tri-City Panhellenic society, and the Glenn Youngkin Navy Mothers' club. Sixty-five members of the organization were present.

The Navy Mothers' Club also entertained a luncheon this noon, honoring Yeoman Vessey, at Hotel Black hawk.

To Officer School

Miss Ethel Vessey, yeoman second class of the navy Waves, recently attached to the Sioux City navy recruiting station will report Saturday at Smith College, Northampton, Mass., for training as a Wave officer, the recruiting station announced. Miss Vessey served as mayor of Sioux City July 30, celebrating the first anniversary of the Waves. During her stay here she addressed most of the service clubs and other large organizations.
