MEET ON FURLOUGH -- A surprise meeting of two old friends took place in Davenport this week when Staff Sergt. Leah Blythe, of the WACs and Helen Vaughn, yeoman, third class, of the WAVES, came home to enjoy a 15-day furlough and seven day leave, respectively. The girls, pictures above were friends for over three years before entering the service, having been employed together at the Peter Pan bakery.

Sergt. Blythe (left), the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Hartman, 1431 1/2 Bridge avenue, is in the motor corps at Ft. Lawton, Wash. She enlisted in the women's army corps seven months ago.

Yeoman Vaughn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Vaughn, 2917 Boles avenue, has completed her training at Iowa State Teachers' college, Cedar, Falls, and will report for duty on the west coast at the end of her leave.

Representing the feminine part of their families in service, the young women also each have a brother in uniform. Corp George Hartman has been in the coast artillery for over a year, an is stationed at Camp Haan, Calif. Pvt Fred Vaughn, of the army infantry, has seen action in New Guinea and is now in Australia. He has been in service for 25 months.

The WAC and the WAVE were pleasantly surprised at meeting on leave, and are now enjoying themselves by exchanging experiences in the two branches of service.
