Anna Shimanek

 

 

JOINING THE MARINES -- Miss Anna Shimanek and Miss Jeanne Sullivan, both employed in the Davenport office of the Chicago Ordnance district Quad-cities sub office, are now privates in the marines.

These two young women are probably the first in the state of Iowa to join this branch of service. They were sworn into the corps February 20 at Chicago after successfully passing all examinations.

Miss Sullivan, on the left, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Sullivan of 2304 Farnam street. She is a graduate of Marycrest and has been employed in the ordnance office for the past year.

Miss Shimanek is the daughter of Attorney and Mrs. F. H. Shimanek of Oxford Jct., Ia. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa and before joining the ordnance office force was employed by Coughlin Sales Co. She made her home at 2022 LeClaire street.

The girls expect to be called into active service the latter part of this month and hope to be sent to Hunter college in New York for their basic training.

Called for Training In Marine Reserve

Miss Anna Shimanek, 2022 LeClaire street, Davenport, is to report May 3, at Hunter college, The Bronx, N.Y., for basic training in the women's reserve of the United States Marines corps. She is the daughter of Attorney and Mrs. F.H. Shimanek, Oxford Junction.

Miss Shimanek, who was graduated for the State University of Iowa in 1939, has been employed for the last year in the quad-city sub-office of the Chicago ordnance district.

Anna Shimanek Wed to Marine

Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Shimanek of Oxford Junction announce the marriage of their daughter, Anna, to Pfc. Raymond F. Kramer, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Kramer of Oxford Junction.

The double ring ceremony took place Feb. 21 in the Chapel of the Archangel at the marine station, Cherry Point, N.C., where both the bride and bridegroom are stationed.

Mrs. Kramer enlisted in the marine corps Feb. 20, 1943 and was the first women marine from Jones county. She received training at Hunter college, Bronx, N.Y., and at aerographers school, Lakehurst, N.J. Mrs. Kramer, a graduate of the Oxford Junction high school, was employed in Davenport before her enlistment.

Pfc. Kramer, a graduate of Urbana high school, was employed by Lampert Yards, Inc, in St. Paul, Minn., prior to his enlistment in the marine corps in November, 1942. He was sent to San Diego, Calif., for initial training, then to radio school in Memphis, Tenn, and received advance radio training at Cherry Point.
