Davenport Teacher Accepted by WAVES

Among Davenport young women to join Uncle Sam's forces is Miss Emilie Placatka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Placatka, 1223 Mound street, who was inducted n the WAVES on April 3. Although she has not yet received her orders to report, Miss Placatka expects to be called within the next few months and will go to either Smith college or Mt Holyoke. She will go into Officers Candidate training.

For two years she has been employed as physical education teacher at Sudlow intermediate school. Miss Placatka attended Iowa State college at Ames and was graduated from the University of Iowa where she majored in physical education. The school board has granted her a leave of absence.

Ensign Emilie Placatka of the WAVES, daughter of Mr and Mrs James Placatka, 1223 Mound street, has been commissioned a lieutenant junior grade.

Lt Placatka entered the WAVES June 3, 1943, and took her training at Smith college, Northampton, Mass.

She is a graduate of the State University of Iowa and also attended Kiowa college, Ames. She received her bachelor of science degree in physical education and after graduation was an instructor in that subject at Oskaloosa, Ia., Mendota, Ill., and at Sudlow intermediate school in Davenport.

Her brother, Seaman James F. Placatka, is also in the navy and has completed his "boot" training at Farragut, Ida. He is now serving on the U.S.S. Lexington.
