Helen Murray Joins WAACS

Miss Helen Murray, 108 1/2 Irving Street, who has been employed in the canning department of the Rath Packing Co. has enlisted in the women's army auxiliary air corps and is now at home awaiting call.

Helen was honored at a farewell party Wednesday night, at which time she was presented with a gift by her co-workers. While awaiting call Miss Murray will visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Murray, Algona, Iowa.

Aux. Helen Murray Awaiting Call to Duty

According to word received from Fort Des Moines Aux. Helen M. Murray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Murray, 1109 E. Call, city, has completed training in the Motor Transport School and is now awaiting assignment to duty. Aux. Murray enlisted in Des Moines last March and on the 12th of April was called to Fort Des Moines for basic training. Following graduation from the Algona High school she was bookkeeper for a while in the Richardson Hardware here and with the Rath Packing Company at Waterloo. Aux Murray is enthusiastic about her job with the United States force s and writes that she enjoys her work very much.

Cpl. Helen Murray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Murray, 907 Lincoln street, after a year's duty in the Pacific theater is returning to the States from Manila, a press release received here Saturday stated. Arriving overseas in September 1944, Cpl. Murray has seen duty on the islands of New Guinea and Luzon. She entered the service in March 1943, training at Fort Des Moines , Ia and at the signal corps schools in Camp Crowder, Mo. Her brother, Pfc Gerald Major is serving with the 80th field artillery in Manila.

Helen M. Murray Rogers was born Oct. 24, 1920 to James and Nina Jorgenson Murray. She died May 18, 2014 and is buried in Garden of Memories, Waterloo, IA. She was married to Paul E. Rogers.
