Lt. (j.g.) Miriam R. Lattimer

 

PROUD MOMENT FOR LATTIMERS -- W.D. Lattimer has seen hundred of North Iowans off to duty in the armed forces. Now he sees his daughter, Miss Miriam Lattimer, sworn into the WAVES. At the right, with Mrs. Lattimer, he looks on as Miss Lattimer takes the oath administered by Ensign Anne Dorsey. At the left H.W. Koeneke of the American Legion acts as color guard.

Mr. Lattimer is a member of the Citizens Victory committee and as such has been at the train for departures of North Iowa boys going into service to say goodbye and give them farewell gifts from the community.

Miss Lattimer, who expects to be called to Smith college, Northampton, Mass., later this month to begin officers training in the WAVES, was graduated in June from the College of St. Teresa, Winona, Minn.

Mason City Has Contingent of Women in the Armed Service

Varied Jobs Performed in Services

Mason City has more than 100 women in the armed services according to the Globe-Gazette files. Largest enlistment of Mason Cityans is in the WAVES with more than 42 enrolled.

The nurses come next with 35 in the army and navy nurse corps and the WACs are 3rd with 18. Also in the service from Mason City are 4 SPARS and 5 members of the Marine Women's Reserve.

Ensign Miriam Lattimer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Lattimer, 243 5th S.E. is the highest ranking commissioned officer in the WAVES from Mason City and achieved the record of being among the 5 highest to be graduated from midshipman's school at Smith college, Northampton, Mass.

Sher received her commission as ensign Dec. 14 and is now studying communications at the naval training school, Mount Holyoke college, South Hadley, Mass.

Ensign Lattimer, who is a graduate of St. Joseph high school and the College of St Teresa at Winona, Minn., began her officer training course in October.

BROTHER AND SISTER IN SERVICE VISIT ON COAST -- Lt. (j.g.) Miriam R. Lattimer, stationed with the WAVES in San Francisco, had a visit last week with her brother, S 1/c Donald W. Lattimer, who was in port there from duty in the south Pacific on a destroyer with the amphibious landing forces.

Miriam has just been advanced to her present rating. She has been in the service 20 months. Donald, who joined the navy in Feb., 1944, went into active service last summer after finishing high school at St. Joseph's here. Miriam, also a graduate of St. Joseph's was graduated from St. Teresa's college, Winona, Minn.
