Chief Warrant Officer, Lillian May Hartley

 

 

 

Lillian May Hartley was born Sept. 2, 1914 to Wilford C. and Matilda “Tillie” Anderson Hartley. She died May 25, 2013 and is buried in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, IA.

Chief Warrant Officer Hartley served with the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Lillian was part of the first class of women Marines and was sent to Hunter College in New York for basic training. She served in the Accounting and Paymaster Division of the Marine Corps and was one of the first two women to make the rank of Warrant Officer in the Corps.
