Fiancé Dead, Brothers in Service, She Joins WACS on 20th Birthday

Her fiancé, a former tail gunner on a Flying Fortress, killed in Italy, two brothers in the service, on in the marines and the other in the navy, Theresa Gross (left) is shown with Lt. Jane L. Smith just after she was sworn into the WACS today - her twentieth birthday.

Miss Gross, daughter of H.P. Gross, 1211 Grand avenue, leaves Thursday for Ft. Des Moines, where she will receive her basic training, after which she will go into her training for a surgical technician at Camp Atterbury, Ind.

Her two brothers, Pfc. Jack Gross, 18, is with the marine's in France and William, 24, is in the navy serving aboard a destroyer. Her fiancé, who she failed to identify, she told Lt. Smith, was killed recently in Italy while on a bombing mission.

Serving in the navy, army and marine corps are two sons and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.P. Gross, 1211 Grand avenue.

Pvt. Theresa Gross of the WACS, has just completed her basic training at Fort Des Moines. A graduate of the Davenport high school, she was employed by the Bettendorf office of the CIO before entering the service.
