54 JOIN THE WAVES -- Pictures above and on the left are 17 of the 54 who passed examinations and were sworn into the WAVES late Thursday. They are among the 75 from the Tri-city area who will depart Aug 11 for Hunter college, New York, to start their training.

WAVE RECRUITERS HERE TO INTERVIEW YOUNG WOMEN

Gladys Frederick, yeoman, first class, and Laurette McCarthy, yeoman, second class, of they navy WAVES, have taken over room 314 in the federal building, next door to the Davenport navy recruiting station, to conduct a campaign to secure women for the WAVES. Yeoman Frederick, whose home is as Strawberry Point, Ia., will remain a week and Yeoman McCarthy will be here for 10 days. They will interview women between 20 and 36 for service in the navy.
