Staff Sergeant Robert A. Winner Missing in Action

Staff Sergeant Robert A. Winner, son of Mrs. John A. Miller, who lives on a farm near Emmetsburg, Iowa and who is a former Sioux City resident and a former Journal carrier salesman, is missing in action over Austria, the war department has reported.

The message informed Mrs. Miller that her son’s plane was shot down over Austria March 19. Sergeant Winner is a first flight engineer and top turret gunner on a bomber and he has been in the service three years, the last year overseas.

A graduate of East High School, his mother and step-father operated a grocery in Sioux City before moving to the farm north of Emmetsburg four years ago.

Robert Arnold Winner was born Jan. 25, 1922 to Melvin and Gladys Morrill Winner. He died Mar. 19, 1944 and is buried in Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM.
