John Atwell Whaley was born May 10, 1900 to Joshua Nelson and Laura Olive Adams Whaley. He died Feb. 9, 1968 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, IA.

Lt. Whaley was a charter member of Co. F, Iowa State Guard unit, during World War II. He was first lieutenant of the Guard unit when it was disbanded following the close of the war.

John Whaley died early this morning

John A. Whaley, 67, a member of the Hamilton County board of supervisors and former mayor of this city, died early this morning at the Lutheran hospital in Fort Dodge where he had been a patient the past four days.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. S. W. Cunningham officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.

John A. Whaley son of Nelson and Olive Whaley, was born Mary 10, 1900, at Augusta, Okla. He began his elementary education in Oklahoma, then later moved with his parents to Wellington, Kan., and also to Columbus, where he completed his education.

He moved with his family to Iowa in 1915, locating on a farm in the Saratoga community south of Webster City. He later attended the Capital City Barber school in Des Moines, returning to Webster City and operating the Whaley Barber shop.

He was united in marriage Feb. 13, 1931, to Louise Nelson and the couple had always since made their home in this community. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Jim (LouAda) Shonerd of Fort Dodge, and Mrs. Dale (LeeAnna) Assing of Ames; two granddaughters, Debbie and Lynn Shonerd; two brothers, Mark Whaley of Webster City and Vernon Whaley of Tucson, Ariz.; also several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Mr. Whaley was serving in his third term as a member of the county board of supervisors and was in his 10th year in that office. He was a previous chairman of the board. He also served on the Webster City council for 13 years and was mayor for part of that time. He served as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce during World War II.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Lions and Elks clubs. He was a member of the Methodist church in Webster City.
