Lt. Merle Edward Vanderhorst

 

 

Merle Edward Vanderhorst was born Sept. 29, 1924 to Gysbert “Bert" and Gertrude Dekker Vanderhorst. He died Aug. 23, 1944 and is buried in Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, IA.

Lt. Vanderhorst served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a co-pilot on B-24J Liberator Bomber #42-78523 “Hard to Get" with the 724th Bomb Squadron, 451st Bomb Group . He was KIA on a mission from Italy to strike the air drome at Markersdorf, Austria.
