FORMER RANDALL YOUTH SAVED AS WASP WENT DOWN

Randall, Iowa—A former local youth, Harris Tweed, seaman second class was aboard the U.S. aircraft carrier Wasp when she was torpedoed and sunk Sept. 15 in the Solomon island area during the huge naval engagement there.

Tweed, who is now on leave and visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Tweed, at Pequot, Minn., was in the water four hours before being picked up.

The sailor is planning to visit relatives and friends here before reporting to duty at San Diego, Calif.

Harris Berlin Tweed was born Feb. 14, 1917 to Hans J. and Bertha Vangness Tweed. He died Oct. 4, 1996 and is buried in Our Saviors Lutheran Church Cemetery, Pequot Lakes, MN.

Petty Officer Tweed served with the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS Wasp (CV-7) which was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-19 on Sept. 15, 1942.
