Robert Leland Thompson was born Aug. 17, 1926 to Thomas and Mamie Thompson. He died Nov. 29, 2000 and is buried in Homewood Cemetery, Ellsworth, IA.

Robert served with the U.S. Army in World War II with Troop B, 10th Constabulary Squadron.

Robert L. Thompson, 74, Ellsworth, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Memorial services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth with Rev. Mike Herschberger to officiate. His body has been donated to the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa in Iowa City according to his wishes. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Leland Thompson was born Aug. 17, 1926 on a farm southeast of Ellsworth to Thomas and Mamie Sanford Thompson. He graduated from Ellsworth High School with the class of 1944. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany and Switzerland during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to Ellsworth to farm with his father. He farmed in the Ellsworth area until ill health forced him to retire in 1974. He married Lois Anderson at Elim Lutheran Church parsonage in Randall on Dec. 12, 1953. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth and served as treasurer of the Sunday School. He also was a member of the Ellsworth American Legion Post, served on the board of directors of the Ellsworth Cooperative Telephone Association and had been the Fire Chief of Ellsworth. In September of 1998, he suffered a stroke, leaving his right side paralyzed, confining him to a wheelchair. He had resided the past two years at the Stratford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Stratford.

Survivors are his wife, Lois, Ellsworth; a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Dawn Thompson of Suva, Figi Islands, two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathryn Prowant of West Des Moines, and Sheryl and David Halverson, Webster City; five grandchildren, Cameron Flores and husband David, Austin, Texas, Carissa Thompson, a student at Texas A&M, Nicholas Thompson of Hondo, Texas, David Prowant and Bradley Prowant, both of West Des Moines; a great-grandson, Xavier Flores of Austin, Texas, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Thora and Carrol Reisetter of Ellsworth, and Dorothy DeSimone of Rome, NY, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Muriel Melling in 1996.
