Donald Edward Tapscott was born Apr. 24, 1921 to Edward John and Klea B. Odell Tapscott. He died Jan. 5, 2011 and is buried in Marble Valley Cemetery, Gilmore City, IA.

Commander Tapscott had been captured in the fall of Manila and was in Bilibid prison camp until his transfer to Japan. He served 3 years 8 months and 11 days of internment in a Japanese POW camp near Nagasaki, witnessed the atomic bomb and its aftermath, and survived the Japanese prisoner transport ship bombing, and eventual sinking. He served 39 years in the U.S. Navy.
