Sgt. Carroll Duane Swartzendruber

 

Carroll Duane Swartzendruber was born June 25, 1924 to Erlis J. and Nettie Bender Swartzendruber. He died May 13, 1944 and is buried in Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupre, Belgium.

Carroll is also memorialized on the back of his mother’s (Nettie Bender Swartzendruber) stone in West Union Mennonite Cemetery, Parnell, IA.

Sgt. Swartzendruber served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 544th Bomb Squadron, 384th Bomb Group, Heavy and was MIA/KIA/FOD and awarded the Purple Heart. Sgt. Swartzendruber was part of the crew of a B-17 (Flying Fortress) which failed to return from a combat mission to Poland.
