His Obituary:

A visitation for Robert Howard Smith, 89, of Arlington Heights, formerly of Chicago and Boone, Iowa, will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. today at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 West Central Road (at Northwest Highway), Mount Prospect. He will lie in state from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 100 South School Street, Mount Prospect.
Interment will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, 9900 North Milwaukee Avenue, Des Plaines.

Born August 5, 1920 in Boone, Iowa, he died Wednesday, June 2, 2010 in Arlington Heights.

Robert was a graduate of Boone High School, and attended Boone Junior College from 1939 to 1941, and Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

He served in the National Guard from 1937 to 1942, was also a World War II Army veteran, where he attended Officer's Candidate School and became a captain in the 400th Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion from 1942 to 1946, and was in the Army Officers Reserve Corps from 1946 to 1953. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, a Resurrection Hospital volunteer, active in the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, and a longtime member and church officer at St. John's Lutheran Church (Mayfair).

Bob loved the closeness of family, savored worldwide traveling, and appreciated a great smile and a hearty laugh. Bob was employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and Northwest Industries.

He was the husband of the late Anna Smith (nee Kraus), to whom he was married from 1948 to 1986, and the late Margaret Hirsch Smith, to whom he was married from 1988 to 2006; father of Bruce H. (Ellen) Smith, Janice E. Schmidt (nee Smith) and Kevin R. (Karen) Smith; and grandfather of Adam H. (Noelle) Schmidt, Emily A. (Craig) Schmidt/Sikora, LeeAnna M. Smith, Christopher B. Smith, Lauryn M. Smith and Nathaniel R. Smith. He is also survived by Margaret Hirsch Smith's children, Cathy, Craig, Janet, Terry and Jim and their families. He also leaves Mark Davidson and family, Jim Meyer and family, Karen Blend and family; and dear friends, Joseph (Toni) Ward and family; and others Bob loved and held close. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold D. Smith and mother, Anna Moeller Smith; stepmother, Mary T. Smith; and sisters, Elaine Davidson and Elizabeth Meyer Ensley.
