George Henry Smith, Jr. was born Sept. 23, 1919 to George Henry (Sr.) and Kate Tojovosky Smith.
George Henry Smith Jr. died July 28, 2017 and is buried in Saint Patricks and Saint Pauls Cemetery, Watkins, IA.
Pvt. Smith served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Shanghai, then Bataan and Corregidor. He was taken as a POW by the Japanese on May 6, 1942 and held in the Philippines and Tokyo until being liberated Aug. 29, 1945.
He was a Life Member of the VFW Post 788, the American Ex-Prisoners of War, the Iowa State Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War ADBC, and the Hawkeye Social Group of ExPOW’s. He served for several years on the VFW Post 788 Honor Guard.
