S/Sgt. Andrew Kelley Smith

 

 

 

GIVEN AWARD

According to word received by Mr. and Mrs. Pete Smith of Blairsburg, their son, Staff Sgt. Andrew K. Smith has been awarded the bronze star medal for meritorious service in “connection with military operations”against an enemy of the United States during the period Sept. 14, 1944 to May 8, 1945.

Smith’s citation read in part: “As mess sergeant of headquarters battery, Staff Sgt. Smith proved himself a responsible supervisor in the adequate and tasteful feeding of his organization at all times and under the most trying conditions.”

The medal was officially awarded June 13, according to a letter sent by the sergeant from his location in Austria. Smith went into the service from Columbus, Ind., where he had been working for about 10 years. With four battle stars and the bronze star he has 88 points, more than enough to qualify for discharge.

Andrew Kelley Smith was born Sept. 14, 1909 to Peter C. and Nellie O’Neal Smith. He died Dec. 17, 1971 and is buried in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, IN.

Sgt. Smith served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and four battle stars.
