WAS ON DESTROYER

Kenneth Simpson, son of Mrs. Ben Simpson of Williams, served for many months on the U. S. S. Maury, a destroyer which was awarded the presidential unit citation for outstanding performance in combat against the Japanese. For 18 months, the destroyer fought in nearly every major engagement in the Pacific, her battle activity actually starting the night after Dec. 7, when she participated in the fruitless search for the enemy forces which attacked Pearl Harbor. During the 18 months the Maury is credited with having contributed materially to the destruction of 3 light cruisers, 10 destroyers, 1 patrol vessel,10 aircraft and a number of shore batteries.

Kenneth George Simpson was born July 3, 1911 to Benjamin and Mae Simpson. He died Nov. 11, 1973 and is buried in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, WA.

Seaman First Class Simpson served with the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Maury (DD-401).
