Obituary

U.S. ARMY
Raymond C. Schmidt, 86, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at a Sergeant Bluff nursing and rehab center following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Allen D. Call of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Schmidt was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Madison, S.D., the son of Edward H. and Marie A. (Reese) Schmidt. He came to Sioux City in 1919, and graduated from East High School.

He was united in marriage to V. Pauline Schmitz on July 23, 1934, in Elk Point, S.D. Mrs. Schmidt passed away May 18, 2000, in Sioux City.

He served his country in the Armed Forces from 1942 to 1945, obtaining the rank of sergeant. He was part owner and frame and alignment technician of E.L. Graham Brake Company through the 1960s. He then worked as an alignment technician for International Harvester Trucks in Sioux City, retiring in 1979.

He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Woodbury County Community Action Agency for many years. He also was a member of the American Legion Monahan Post 64 for 39 years.

Survivors include four grandchildren and their spouses, William and Michelle Schmidt of Sioux City, Edward and Robin Schmidt of Pensacola, Fla., Scott and Patti Schmidt of Tacoma, Wash., and Jennifer and Glen Thompson of Hornick, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Allner; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, V. Pauline; two sons, Edward and David; and a great-great-granddaughter.
