Walter Gene “Gene” Sandeman was born Feb. 12, 1923 to Yale Dewitt and Genevieve Fay Hipes Sandeman. He died June 6, 1944 and is buried in Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France. He has a cenotaph in Graceland Cemetery, Creston, IA.
Sgt. Sandeman served in World War II with the U.S. Army 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment and was KIA in Normandy, France and was awarded the Purple Heart.
