Sgt. Charles Byron Roberts Jr.

 

 

Charles Byron Roberts, Jr. was born Oct. 11, 1918 to Charles Byron (Sr.) and Rose May Musgrove Roberts. He died July 30, 1943/FOD July 31, 1944 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands and has a cenotaph in Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, IA.

Sgt. Roberts was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal.

Sgt. Roberts served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 153rd Observation Squadron and was MIA/FOD/KIA over the English Channel. He was a gunner on an attack bomber plane engaged on a mission to Schipol Airfield, Netherlands. While attempting to climb above fog his plane was seen to turn and suddenly dive into the sea. This occurred about midway between England and Holland.
