Sioux Cityan Dies In Action

Corporal A.J. Nikles, Once Guardsman, Is Killed in Italy


Corporal Alphonse J. Nikles, 24, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nikles, 1207 Court Street, “was killed in action in Italy December 2.”

Such was the content of a telephone gram received recently by his parents from the war department. He was born November 7, 1919, in Hartington, Nebraska.

He went to Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, with the Iowa National Guard and had been overseas about two years.

Surviving in addition to the parents are four brothers, Harold John Nikles, a patient in a military hospital in Sun Valley, Idaho; Edward J. Nikles, with the Seabees stationed at Norman, Oklahoma and Albin, Jr., and Bernard, both of Sioux City and two sisters, Evelyn and Danellda, both at home. Two grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Pieper, Fordyce, Nebraska, also survive.

Alphonse John Nikles died Dec. 2, 1943 and is buried in Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, Nettuno, Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart.
