Pvt. Maynard O. Nelson




Pvt. Maynard Nelson of Ellsworth was killed in action on Okinawa April 28, according to a telegram from the war department to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Nelson. This is the first death of an Ellsworth man in service in this war.

Private Nelson entered the army Jan. 1, 1942, was trained at Camp Roberts, Cal., and was on maneuvers in Texas. He went overseas in March 1944, to Hawaii. He saw action on Saipan and other islands in the Pacific and was in at the start on April 5, of the Okinawa invasion. The last letter to his parents was dated March 5, 1945.

Maynard Orris Nelson was born Aug. 1, 1917 to Andrew and Anna Nelson. He died Apr. 28, 1945 and is buried in the Homewood Cemetery, Ellsworth, IA.

Maynard served with the 106th Infantry, 27th Division, Co. L. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
