Pvt. Howard Kenneth Johnson

 

 

 

Howard Kenneth Johnson was born Dec. 24, 1924 to John A. and Bertha Jacobs Johnson. He died Dec. 29, 2015 and is buried in the Sheffield Cemetery, Story City, IA.

Pvt. Johnson served with the U.S. Army in World War II and was stationed in Japan where he was an armored car driver.

Howard Kenneth Johnson was born December 24, 1924 to John A. and Bertha (Jacobs) Johnson in Story County, Iowa. Howard attended Sheffield Country School and Story City High School.

On October 31, 1943, he and Betty Mullins were married in Blairsburg. Three children were born to this union. They later divorced.

Howard and Lisa Sogard were married in October of 1978. Two children were born to this union. This marriage ended in divorce.

He lived in the Stanhope and Jewell communities for most of his adult life. He currently resided in Story City with his loving companion, Evelyn Dyer.

Howard served in the United States Army during WWII. He was stationed in Japan and was an armored car driver.

After the war, he worked in county maintenance, as a truck driver, and was sexton for many years for Evergreen Cemetery.

Howard was an avid horseman his whole life and loved music and dancing, especially at Lake Robbins Ballroom to big band music.

Howard passed away at 91 years of age on December 29, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Howard is survived by his children, Cheryl (Ed) Haman of Stratford, Mike (Carol) Johnson of Marshalltown, Randy (Becky) Johnson of Eastman, Wis., Hesston (Kara) Johnson of Story City, and Heath (Justine) Johnson of Jewell; 13 grandchildren, Lee (Paige) Maples of West Palm Beach, Fla., Rob Maples of West Palm Beach, Joe (Stacey) Maples of Camdenton, Mo., Lake Johnson of Houston, Texas, John (Yve) Johnson of West Des Moines, Adam (Autumn) Johnson of Marshalltown, Catherine Johnson of Denver, Colo., Jennifer (Jason) Stollenwerk of Bend, Ore., Casey Johnson of Postville, and Reese Johnson, Hesston Johnson , Riley Johnson and Ali Johnson, all of Story City; his step-grandchildren, Lance (Kelly) Haman of Stratford and Jill Haman of Stanhope; 18 great-grandchildren; 9 step great-grandchildren; 3 nieces, Rosalie (Harlan) Olson, Carol (Larry) Perkins and Linda (Ron) Reis; a nephew, Steve Baldus; several cousins; and his companion, Evelyn Dyer of Story City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Anna Baldus Johnson; two nephews, infant David Baldus, and Dick Baldus; and a step-grandson, Lon Haman.
