Harris Jonathan Johnson was born May 17, 1913 to Hans J. and Stella Kallemeyn Johnson. He died Aug. 17, 1942 and is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1999 the remains of Cpl. Johnson were discovered on Butaritari and in 2000 he was returned to the U.S. for burial in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Cpl. Johnson served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps 2nd Raider Battalion and was KIA during combat operations on Makin Atoll.
