Melvin J. Hammer was born Oct. 28, 1924 to William Fred and Clara Minnie Ress Hammer, He died Feb. 2, 1945 and is buried in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Denison, IA.
Pvt. Hammer served in World War II with the U.S. Army 475th Infantry and died of wounds received in action in Burma.
