GIVEN PROMOTION

Lyle Goodrich, of this city, stationed at New Delhi, India, with an army detachment, has been advanced to the rank of corporal, according to word received here by his wife. Corporal Goodrich writes that he enjoys his work in that country, and that with summer getting underway there, it is very hot during the day. He has been on several sightseeing tours sponsored by the Red Cross during which he visited a Hindu temple. He hopes to visit the famous Taj Mahal in the near future. Corporal Goodrich also writes that he has seen quite a few movie stars who are touring that war theater, including Paulette Goddard, Ed Wynn’s son and Capt. Melvyn Douglas.

Lyle Ernest Goodrich was born May 25, 1911 to Ernest and Irene Nott Goodrich. He died Aug. 15, 1998 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, IA.

Sgt. Goodrich served with the U.S. Army in World War II in a supply company in the Asian Theater of Action.

His Obituary:

Lyle Goodrich, 87 of Mesa, AZ, a former Webster City businessman, died Saturday, August 15 at the Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home with Barbara Chapman officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery with Graveside military rites conducted by American Legion Post #191. Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon Thursday until the service time.

Lyle Ernest Goodrich, son of Ernest and Irene Nott Goodrich, was born May 25, 1911 at Webster City. He attended Webster City Schools and Webster City Junior College for two years. During WW II, he served with the Army in a supply company as a sergeant in the Asian Theater of Action. On Oct. 15, 1936, he married Opal Lorene Waggoner at Webster City. The couple resided in Webster City. He was the assistant manager of J.C. Penney’s in Webster City, Hutchinson, MN, and Wadena, MN. In Rockford, ND, he was the manager of Penneys. They returned to Wadena, where they operated Lyle’s Shoe Store. Opal Goodrich died on April 14, 1969. On June 19, 1971, he married Mary Elizabeth Shaw Erdman at Minneapolis. He retired in 1978 and moved to Big Lake, MN in 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Lyle Bye of Lino Lakes, MN; grandchildren, Rachel and Rebekah Bye.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Wendell Goodrich and Sister, Charlotte Gohn.
