Pvt. Fred Edward Gatewood, Jr.

 

 

 

Fred Edward and Daisy Marie Sweazey Gatewood had three sons serving with the U.S. Army in World War II:

Fred Edward Gatewood, Jr. was born Sept. 26, 1924. He died Oct. 5, 1971.

Pvt. Gatewood is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, IA.

Gatewood rites to be Thursday

Fred E. Gatewood, Jr., 47, a lifelong Webster City resident, died early this morning at the Hamilton County hospital. He had been hospitalized the past two weeks and had been in ill health for the past month.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. Marvin E. Brewer officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion.

Fred E. Gatewood, Jr., son of Fred E. and Daisy Sweazey Gatewood, was born Sept. 26, 1924 at Webster City. He was reared and educated in Webster City.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, spending 18 months overseas in Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland.

He was united in marriage Oct. 25, 1948 to Rose M. Keller, and the couple made their home in Webster City where he had been employed the past 24 years at the Nissen and Son Packing Co.

He is survived by his wife; three sons and one daughter, Gerald Gatewood, Webster City, Charles Gatewood, Woolstock, Mrs. Roger (Diana) Lindeman of Blairsburg and Rodney Gatewood, Webster City; four grandsons, Roger and Kelly Lindeman and Charles Gatewood, Jr., and Fred E. Gatewood, III. Also surviving are three brothers and three sisters, Donald Gatewood, Cedar Rapids, Delbert Gatewood, Mrs. Earl (Beverly) Berleen, Robert Gatewood, Mrs. Gary (Gloria) Young and Connie Hilpipre, all of Webster City; one half-brother and one half-sister, Mrs. Walter (Evelyn Brown) Wagner, Webster City, and Francis Brown of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Donald William Gatewood was born Oct. 12, 1927. He died Feb. 1, 1985.

Pvt. Gatewood is buried in Cedar Memorial Park, Cedar Rapids, IA.

Charles Alva Gatewood was born Sept. 10, 1920. He died Oct. 16, 1965.

Sgt. Gatewood is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, IA.
