PFC. Dunn Gets German Sniper
Sioux Cityan in Italy Knocks Out 1 Nazi, Captures Another

With the Fifth Army, Italy—Quick action and accurate shooting by Pfc. Sylvester J. Dunn of 618 Court Street, Sioux City, resulted in killing one German sniper and the capture of another on the Fifth Army front in Italy recently.

Pvt. Dunn, special combat policeman attached to the 34th Red Bull infantry division, was directing the regimental convoy when an enemy sniper opened fire from a creek bed.

The Sioux City soldier killed the German at 300 yards.
“Then an Italian women told me another Jerry was in a house nearby,” Dunn related. “I didn’t have to do any shooting for I was able to get into the house from the rear and he didn’t try to use his machine pistol. He seemed to be glad that the war was over for him.”

Pvt. Dunn, who is married and has one child, has been in action throughout the Italian campaign, including the bitter fighting at Cassino and the Anzio beachhead. He formerly was with a pioneer and ammunition section.

Pfc. Sylvester J. Dunn Is Awarded the Bronze Star

Pfc. Sylvester J. Dunn, formerly of 615 Iowa Street, has been awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action while serving with Lieut. Gen. Mark W. Clark’s Fifth army in Italy.

While on duty as a guide at a road intersection, Pfc. Dunn was fired on by an enemy patrol. Although alone and armed only with a carbine he returned their fire and moved into a field to get a better firing position. By his cool and accurate shooting he killed one of the enemy, wounded another and drove off the remainder of the patrol.

The citation which accompanied the award read “As a result of his heroic action, the regimental motor train which reached the intersection shortly afterwards, was able to continue uninterrupted.”
