U.S. NAVY NOTIFIES FAMILY OF JOHN DEITERS’ DEATH LATE WEDNESDAY

The Deiters family were stunned to receive word late Wednesday afternoon of the death of John Deiters. His wife, who has been staying in Storm Lake notified the relatives here that she had received word from the Navy department of her husband’s death, but no details were available as yet. John had been in the Navy about a week, as far as is known and the message came from Montana, exact location not stated.
Funeral services will be held in Sioux Center as soon as the remains arrive here.

Military Services For John Deiters
FIRST S.C. SERVICEMAN TO BE LAID TO REST HERE
The remains of John Deiters, member of Naval Reserve arrived in Sioux Center by train Tuesday morning escorted by another member of the U. S. Navy, E. E. Hamilton. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Mrs. H. Deiters home with the Sheldon State Guard Firing Squad and Color Guard performing Military Honors for the deceased. Burial took place in the family plot here.
Reports from Naval Hospital Headquarters showed that death occurred from illness and was strictly in the line of duty. He was enroute from Chicago Recruiting Station to Farragut, Idaho, when he became ill and his death occurred at Libby, Montana.
Flags were placed at half mast in the business district in observation of the last rites for the first Sioux Center serviceman to be laid to rest in the local cemetery. Members of the local American Legion Post acted as pall bearers.
Members of the family who came home for the funeral included Pvt. Walt Hughes stationed at Lincoln, Nebr., Mrs. Walt Hughes and Stevena Deiters of Grand Rapids, Mich., Larry Deiters of Minneapolis and Sgt. Herman Deiters of Camp Savage, Minn.

Obituary
John Deiters, AS-USNR, son of Mrs. H. Deiters was born in Sioux Center, Iowa on January 11, 1908. He attended the local public schools and then attended Electrical Engineering school in Milwaukee, Wisc. Upon graduation accepted employment with the Iowa Public Service in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was married to Ella Manchester of Storm Lake on Dec. 1st, 1933.

For the past two years John had been employed in Chicago until his enlistment in the Navy on August 19, 1943.

He is survived by his wife and mother, four brothers and six sisters.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral of their brother, John Deiters were: Larry Deiters, who returned to his home in St. Paul Wednesday; Pvt. Herman Deiters, who left Sunday for his duties at Camp Savage, Minn.; Pvt. Walter Hughes, who left Wednesday for Lincoln, Nebr.; Miss Stevena Deiters left on Monday night for Grand Rapids, Mich. and Mrs. Walter Hughes left Wednesday for her home in Grand Rapids. Mrs. Edward Fisher of Muskegon, Mich. and Tunis (Lutz) Deiters were unable to be present. John Deiters became ill on the train while on his way from Chicago to Farragut, Idaho, where he was to begin his training for the Navy. Death was due to heart failure.
