Edward James Counsell

 

KILLED IN ACTION --Edward James Counsell, son of Mrs. H.F. Rutter of Riceville, was killed as a result of enemy action while in the service of his country, according to word from the navy department. He had been in the submarine service since June, 1944. He was 21 years old and besides his mother he leaves his step-father who is in the navy somewhere in England, a brother, Duane, in the navy at Pearl Harbor, and a sister, Norma Jean, a senior in Riceville high school.

Edward James Counsell was born Dec. 10, 1923 to Dale James and Burlette Ingeborg Egdahl Counsell. He died Feb. 13, 1945 and is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.

Petty Officer Counsell served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Long Island (CVE-1), PC-49, and USS Sea Fox (SS-402) and died of wounds after being ambushed by Japanese stragglers on the island of Guam.
