Sioux County's second largest draft contingent will leave for army examination Sept. 21, According to an announcement by the Draft Board this week.  Sixty-three men will be called.  Men in the group who pass their physical examinations will be sworn in and given a two weeks furlough before being sent to the induction center for actual induction.  .... James Bartels in Calif. with Army
Pvt. James Bartels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bartels is now located in San Diego, Calif. with the U. S. army.  He was inducted at Orange City although his home has been in California.  His wife has been visiting at the Ralph Bartels home near Carmel but will leave for Bellflower, Calif. soon.  Address: Pvt. Pvt. James A. Bartels, who is stationed at Camp Callan, San Diego, Cal. called his mother at 11 o'clock Sunday morning by telephone from Bellflower, California, where he and his wife were spending the weekend.

Clifford Top, states: "Seven boys from Sioux county came to Camp Callan with me, and all are living within a block of each other.  Every Sunday morning we go to church together, that is if we aren't on any guard detail.  James A. Bartels from Sioux Center is in the same barracks as I am."

Henry J. Bartels received a letter of his brother, Pvt. James A. Bartels, asking him to thank each and every one for packages, gifts, cards and letters sent during his time in the army.  Pvt. Mrs. James Bartels came by bus to Sioux Center last Wednesday from Seattle, Wash. where her husband, Pfc. James Bartels is stationed.  She has been with her husband for one year.  James is a truck driver.  Mrs. Bartels plans to stay with her folks, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Vander Velde at Rock Valley.
