Capt. Alvie Arthur Bergman

 

 

 

Alvie Arthur Bergman was born Jan. 17, 1917 to Henry R. and Amanda Sophia Thid Bergman. He died Nov. 28, 2003 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Stratford, IA.

Capt. Bergman served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was an Engineering Officer serving in the India-Burma-China Theatre.

Alvie Bergman, son of Henry and Amanda Bergman, was born on a farm near Dayton, Iowa on January 17, 1917. He passed away at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa on November 28, 2003 at the age of 86.

He was raised on the farm where he was born and graduated from Stratford High School in 1935. Alvie married Wanda Malone on June 15, 1941. They had two sons: Donnis and Marlin.

Alvie first worked as a bookkeeper at the Stratford Grain & Supply until he was called to serve in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He served for 3-1/2 years - two of which were spent in the 27th Troop Carrier in India-Burma-China. He attained the rank of Captain - Engineering Officer.

After WWII, he worked at Stratford Grocery until moving back to the family farm between Dayton and Stratford, which he farmed until retiring in 1989.

Alvie served on the boards of Stratford Grain & Supply and the Stratford Telephone Company. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Stratford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters (Elsie & Esther) and two brothers (Leonard & Herbert). Survivors include his wife Wanda, sister Edith, sons Donnis (wife Adelia) and Marlin (wife Sheree), four grandchildren (Kimberly, Jason, Ryan & Adam) and three great-grandchildren (Abbey, Amanda & Carter Bloomquist).
