Arthur J. Arends was born Dec. 3, 1927 to Arthur J. ‘Artie’ and Jennie Hassebrock Arends. He died Aug. 6, 1982.

Arthur served with the U.S. Army in World War II.

His Obituary:

Funeral services were held Tuesday at St Mary's Catholic church in Manchester, Iowa, for Arthur J. Arends, 54, former Stanhope resident who was killed last Friday night in a two car accident near Manchester.

The Rev. John Walsh officiated at the services with burial being made at St. Mary's cemetery. Rosary was at 4 p.m. Monday at the Bohlenkamp-Vernon funeral home with scripture at 8 p.m.

Mr. Arends had been owner-operator of the AAA Vending Co. the past six years but prior to that was widely known as a teacher at Manchester and also as a teacher and coach at Earlville.

His teaching career spanned a period of 26 years. Other schools in which he taught were at Otho and Hanlantown. He was a former president of the West Delaware education association and while at Manchester served for 12 years on the park board.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post and of St. Mary's church.

He was born Dec. 3, 1927 at Kamrar, the son of Arthur J. and Jennie Hassebrock Arends. He was graduated from Stanhope high school and attended Iowa State Teachers college where he received his B.S. degree. He received his master's degree at Drake.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. Mary Arends; four daughters; one son; his mother, Mrs. Jennie Arends of Stanhope; three brothers, Richard of Webster City, Larry of Stanhope and Alan of Albert Lea.

He was preceded in death by his father and his first wife, Lana.
