Sgt. Leroy John Anderson

Leroy John Anderson was born Aug. 4, 1925 to Henry and Kate Anderson. He died Oct. 13, 1958 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, IA.

Sgt. Anderson served with the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 3rd Battalion, 187th Glider Infantry, 11th Airborne Division in World War II.

His Death Notice:

A 33-year-old Webster City farmer was killed shortly after 7:30 last evening when his car missed a turn, and overturned while he was returning to his home after helping with corn picking at his father's farm.

Dead is LeRoy J. Anderson, who lived a mile south of Webster City on South Des Moines St.

Anderson was killed when his car rolled down an embankment at a sharp turn on a gravel road, 6-1/2 miles southwest of Webster City.

His car overturned as it plunged down the six-foot embankment and Anderson died from suffocation when he was pinned between the door and the door frame of the overturned auto.

Anderson had left his parents' farm, located about halfway between Kamrar and Jewell, about 7:30 last evening. His body and the wrecked car were discovered by a passing motorist at 7:50.

The Webster City fire department rescue squad were called to the accident scene to help remove Anderson's body from the overturned car.

Sheriff Ray Lear said this morning that there was an indication that Anderson's car skidded out of control at the sharp curve. "It looked as if he drove straight off the curve and it's possible he fell asleep at the wheel," Lear said.
Anderson was apparently familiar with the road since he had driven it many times enroute to the farm home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Anderson.

His death was the fourth highway fatality recorded in Hamilton county this year. Last year Hamilton county recorded 15 traffic deaths.

Mike Nepereny of Webster City discovered the accident and notified authorities.

Funeral services for Mr. Anderson will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Methodist church with the Rev. R. D. Kitterman officiating. Military services will be held at the grave in Graceland cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Foster funeral home until noon Thursday, when it will be taken to the church.
