Lt. Harold Achenbach

Harold Achenbach, son of Mrs. Martha Achenbach of this city, received his wings and commission as lieutenant in the army air forces at the Midlands school, Midlands, Texas, June 3.  Following his graduation he was ordered transferred from Texas to Carlsbad, N.M.

MEDAL GIVEN TO ACHENBACH

W.C. Officer Has Flown on 23 Missions As B-24 Bombardier

Lt. Harold F. Achenbach, son of Mrs. Martha Achenbach of the city, has been awarded the air medal, according to a dispatch from 15th army air force headquarters in Italy.

Lieutenant Achenbach, a bombardier on a Liberator was awarded the medal “for meritorious achievement in aerial flight while participating in sustained operational activities against the enemy.”

The Webster City officer went to Italy in February and since then has flown 23 combat missions, according to the dispatch from Italy. He has seen action over France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Romania, Hungary and Yugoslavia.

Harold Frederick Achenbach was born Dec. 10, 1917 to Henry and Martha Rauscher Achenbach. He died Mar. 21, 2002.

Lt. Achenbach served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a bombardier on a B-24 bomber and was awarded the Air Medal.
