 Stanley – Mr. and Mrs. Otis Smith have received word that their son, Pfc. Merle O. Smith, has been awarded the Combat Infantryman’s badge for exemplary conduct against the enemy during the Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea action. Smith has been in the army 37 months and overseas 32, and has never had a furlough.

When last heard from him, he was stationed in the Netherlands East Indies.

Stanley –Pfc. Merle O. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Smith, east of Stanley, is on a 21-day furlough with his parents, after being overseas 36 months in Australia, New Guinea and Netherlands East Indies. He was in three major engagements, Papa, Hollandia and Blak.
